چکیده

Invasive predators are a critical driver of global biodiversity loss • Invasive predators (particularly feral cats and foxes) are the cause of many native mammal extinctions throughout Australia •Well established predators cannot be eradicated due to the cost •One method to protect threatened species is exclusion fencing • Although fences are predator proof, breaches occasionally occur (tree fall, gates left open) •Managers distribute poisoned bait in a buffer around the fences, at a uniform density, to reduce the probability of a predator entering though it is unknown if this is a ‘good’ approach What distribution of poison bait minimises predator density at the fence? Problem

Modelling the impacts of an invasive species across landscapes: a step-wise approach

We estimate the extent of ecological impacts of the invasive Asian paper wasp across different landscapes in New Zealand. We used: (i) a baseline distribution layer (modelled via MaxEnt); (ii) Asian paper wasp nest density (from >460 field plots, related to their preferences for specific land cover categories); and (iii) and their foraging intensity (rates of foraging success, and the time avai...

Conservation biological control and enemy diversity on a landscape scale

Conservation biological control in agroecosystems requires a landscape management perspective, because most arthropod species experience their habitat at spatial scales beyond the plot level, and there is spillover of natural enemies across the crop–noncrop interface. The species pool in the surrounding landscape and the distance of crop from natural habitat are important for the conservation o...

Modelling of the spatial distribution of the rare plant Lilium ledebourii

The aim of this study was modelling the spatial distribution ofLilium ledebourii (Baker) Boiss. based on ecological characteristics, in order to predict potential habitats for conservation of a rare plant. Knowledge of the spatial distributions of rare and threatened species and the underlying ecological factors plays an important role in regional conservation assessments and development planni...

Triage of Conservation Needs: The Juxtaposition of Conflict Mitigation and Connectivity Considerations in Heterogeneous, Human-Dominated Landscapes

Conservation of wide-ranging endangered species is increasingly focused on large heterogeneous landscapes. At such scales, particularly when conservation landscapes are human dominated, it is imperative that prioritization techniques be used to allocate limited resources wisely. Moreover, spatial aspects of conservation planning warrant key consideration within these landscapes, such that certa...

Choosing the Appropriate Scale of Reserves for Conservation

■ Abstract Over the past ten years the scientific basis for reserve selection and design have rapidly developed. This period has also been characterized by a shift in emphasis toward large spatial and organizational scales of conservation efforts. I discuss the evidence in support of this shift toward larger scale conservation by contrasting the success of fine-filter (genes, populations, speci...
